  1. The purpose behind the transcripts listed here is to augment the coverage of Boyd's Marriage Index, in which the bulk of the county is found up to 1753 and extending it to 1851.
  2. In most cases, transcription has begun at one of the following dates 1754, 1801, 1813 or 1837. With the exception of 1801, these are the dates of the introduction of the different styles of registers.
  3. Parishes whose starting dates here is 1801 [or thereabouts] are catered for because their marriages for the period 1801-1837 are not found in the Essex volumes of Boyd Marriage Index; they are in the Miscellaneous volumes [not available at the Essex Record Office] apart from a few exceptions.
  4. Parishes whose names are followed by a reference to Boyd, or with a final date prior to 1851, at present still hold later registers, so far as is known.
  5. Note The Harwich Independent, Great [Old] Sampford Baptist, & Saffron Walden Congregational marriages are not taken from the official printed forms introduced in 1837, the information is less than complete.
