Assassins (1995)
Enjoyable watch
This was made in 1995 and is not an Oscar winning film, but it is a well made action film
which is still enjoyable judged against today's standard. It was written by the Wachowski
brothers (Matrix), and Helgelund (Knight's Tale) assisted with the screen play. Richard
Donner directed.
Robert Wrath (Sylvestor Stallone), an established assassin, wants to retire and does one last
job but is beaten to the kill by another assassin. This turns out to be a rival hit man
Miguel Baigne (Antonio Banderos) who has ambitions on becoming number one in place of Wrath.
Of course there is a woman involved, a computer disk that has a price on it and another hit job, which
involves one of the hit men being hired to take out the other.
The plot is adequate for a reasonable thriller but the photography is also very good, lots of unusual
camera angles but not over done. Nice lighting and colours (although the film starts in black
and white - the standard flashback indicator). There is good acting from the three main leads, you
care about the characters who are, lets face it, all a bit bad as far as the law goes. The
diction of Stallone and Banderas was a little difficult in places but the film was easy to follow as
it explained important plot points. For example why Banderas left his sniper's nest and went
in to the bank was talked through by Stallone before the event, when he was rehearsing in his mind
how it would all go. This scene also explained why he chose that bank to get his money.
There is a very small bit of Spanish dialogue which is not subtitled (good in my view). If you
really want to know what was said you can find out on the IMDB forum for this film.
Good entertainment for a wet Saturday afternoon.
