Bring Me the Head of Mavis Davis (1997)
Star shines
This film, like Little Voice, is another tour de force by Jane Horrocks. The contrast
between her as the big hit Marla Dorland, and the naive Mavis Davis in the flash backs, is so
great that she looks like two different actresses. Rik Mayall plays Marty, a shady song
producer, "a character made for him", as he says in the extras. Danny Aeillo is
a (US) gangland boss that is getting impatient with Marty's lack of development of his son
(who can't sing), and wants his money back.
A plot is woven around the trouble that Marty gets himself into in trying to pay off the
debt. The film is not a big box office stunner, but has some funny moments and is a
pleasant enough watch if you have some spare time. It will probably only appeal to a
British audience though. Marc Warren plays a good supporting role as the would be hit
man. What does make the film worth watching is Jane Horrock's performance. She
shines throughout and shines metaphorically at the end of the film in portraying a third
character in the resolution of the plot.
